Thank you for your interest in Deep Roots - an interdenominational organisation promoting Christian discipleship amongst the youth in the Kasese District in the west of Uganda. Your financial gift goes directly to the ongoing work initiated by Dave Renno and Asanasio Kainja Thembo.
Through the use of culturally relevant teaching materials, developed locally, and through the use of media, Deep Roots trains and equips volunteer youth leaders and young people to live out their Christian commitment in a meaningful and transformative way. Deep Roots adopts a three-pronged approach: youth discipleship, leadership development and radio broadcasting.

Why We Exist
Deep Roots is a Bible based Christian discipleship programme located in the Rwensori District of Uganda. 75% of the population is under 30. Uganda’s youth face a paradox: they’re surrounded by vibrant faith traditions yet often lack spaces to ask hard questions.
As one Ugandan puts it, ‘Young people here crave truth that speaks to their daily struggles—school, family, identity.’ That’s where interdenominational Deep Roots steps in offering Biblically based answers through peer-led Now We Are Saved (NWAS) groups, radio teachings in English and in local language, and leader trainings.
About Us
Our Story: From Listening to Legacy
In 2001, David Renno (a UK Bible student) and Asanasio Kainja (a Ugandan youth worker) stood amidst crowds of young Ugandans responding to the gospel at mass rallies - but with no discipleship to follow. Aware of this gap, they spent two years listening. ‘In our culture,’ Asanasio explains, ‘youth couldn’t question elders. We wanted to change that.’
Their answer? The Now We Are Saved (NWAS) booklets—simple, illustrated guides inviting peers to explore Scripture for answers together.
‘It wasn’t about teachers and learners,’ David once said. The model they adopted was ‘first you learn, then you teach’. So, whatever they learnt, they invited others to explore.

Meet the team
Following David’s death in 2017, Asanasio now leads the team, pursuing the same vision which is to encourage true Christian discipleship amongst the youth of Uganda, by putting into practice the lifestyle and teachings of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and resulting in transformed communities.
Led by Asanasio, the small team of Annet, with volunteers Joseph and Gidion serve with the same humility that started it all.

What we do
Today, Deep Roots trains leaders, broadcasts radio teachings, and nurtures NWAS groups in schools and colleges. When COVID-19 closed classrooms and churches, these youth led their families in Bible study. When riots threatened schools, NWAS members became peacemakers.
Imagine students gathering weekly, to ask hard questions about life. What they learn they
teach others, using the same NWAS booklets. This results in a ‘mushroom effect’ increasing the number of young people helped. Teachers report transformed students; during lockdowns, these youth became spiritual
leaders at home.
NWAS Groups
1
Many church leaders lack training, resulting in fragmented teaching. A 3-year workshop programme has equipped ‘Ambassadors’ like James, a teacher-turned-pastor: ‘Deep Roots trained me to handle
Scripture—and now I train others.’
Adult Workshops
2
‘Staff must research real community questions,’ notes a listener, impressed by how relevant the Bible teaching programmes are. ‘Deep Roots teachings are very clear,’ says a Kagando Hospital staff member.
